Synopsis: Darren is a teenage boy who is very big into “goth” stuff. While on the Internet, he comes across a website called devilstrade.com, where he finds a cross made of wood…from the Devil’s Tree. The tree is said to be born of the Devil himself, and that anyone who comes into contact with it dies a horrible death. Darren and his sister Anna are home alone while there parents are away for an unmentioned period of time. During some canoodling with her boyfriend Jim, Darren swipes Anna’s credit card and buys the cross. Once it arrives in the mail, Anna opens it and finds the hideously ugly cross. While in the shower with Jim, Anna has a very real vision of Jim gagging on blood and spitting it in her face. Taken back by this sudden horrific premonition, Anna retreats from the tub.

Review: I wasn’t really too sure how to take this series before watching it. I knew nothing about it but saw it advertised on UHM’s website. Produced by Ghost House Productions and FEARnet, I was sure to enjoy it. Obviously, like most first episodes, this one introduces characters and situations. This one introduced the cross into the lives of Darren, Anna, and Jim. From here, I’m guessing, they will continue the story as horrible things begin to happen all around them.

The story thus far is not bad. With an interesting hook (the cross) they managed to keep my full attention. I was worried at first; this being “just another curse”, but it actually seems pretty solid. I’m very interested in seeing where they go from here.

The acting is almost a non-issue right now. Even if the acting is bad right now, it might get better. Just like in the TV show Friends; I didn’t like a few of the actor’s styles, but they eventually grew on me. I’m hoping for the same thing here. But not a whole lot to talk about here…acting was plateau-ish…thus far.

The gore was cool, and very well done. The only gore shown was in the shower scene with Jim and Anna. As they make out, Anna starts having a vision of Jim gagging up blood and spitting it in her face (unintentionally). It wasn’t overdone or underestimated; there was just enough to make me widen my eyes in interest, but not too much were I started to laugh.

Rating: These first episodes are difficult to rate. I have to take into account a possibly lengthy storyline and rate an episode based on the few things I know. I wish this was easier. So…18. Very, very intriguing with some well done gore at the end. Plus, the previews for next week’s episode look totally boss. (18of25).
